10 Facts About Valentine's Day

Most of Europe has a dark past. Rome is no exception.  It's history is shrouded in murder, rape, war, and disease. So how can this brick wasteland be the origin for Valentine's Day? Similar to Paris, France, Rome, Italy is known to be the city of love. This bustling city holds many secrets that I am willing to expose.

Origin:

1. Valentine's day dates back to the 5th Century

2. The Catholic Church recognized 3 different saints named Valentinus

3.The Emperor believed that single men made better soldiers. Therefore, he decided to make it illegal for young people to get married at all.

4. 1 of the saints was sentenced to death for marrying off young couples.

5. The Romans held a feast called Lupercalia which entailed the sacrificing of animals in a small cave

6. Valentine's day was not recognized as a lovers holiday until the late 1500s

7. Chaucer, a poet, spread the idea of love. From their this holiday grew into what it is today

Now:

8. Valentine's day is the second most internationally recognized holiday after Christmas

9. This holiday grosses over 50 million a year

10. Schools have adopted this holiday to share amongst classmates

Catch 22: My Thoughts

I'm taking a fiction appreciation class this semester. So far, it has failed all of my expectations. I really want to reread and discuss books from this century, is that too much to ask for. Well, we've been assigned Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. I can honestly say that I haven't read anything like this book. I don't know which character is crazier than the others, all I can say is that Yossarian is the least crazy. When I first read chapter 1, I didn't know what to think. Here we have this air force guy faking a liver disease and censoring letters as if it were a game. A few chapters in you realize that all of his crew is bat-shit crazy and the poor guy just wants to leave the service.  This book is a really nice read, unless you planning to join the military. Basically, you have Captain Cathcart, a bastard who keeps raising the amount of missions the pilots have to service so that he can have glory. Orr, a short and secretive mechanic who'll make you go crazy from his twisted word play. Milo, a money hungry business man that'll sell you cotton for 7 cents when he bought if for 5 cents. Hungry Joe, a pilot plagued with awful nightmares, but you won't pity the guy because he's a perv. Seriously! that guy should be called "thirsty Joe." Nately, a young and naive guy in love with a prostitute. There are many more, but these characters really stand out. I could describe Major Major Major Major or I could let you read about it.

Dead Leaves

Dead leaves fell like tears from a tree
Each leaf fell victim to grief
Abandoned by it’s furry beasts
Pity made them stay, burden made them leave.

When the dead leaves fell no more
The branches weren’t burdened at all
But still no sight of the beasts return
They found a Haven beneath a bush.
Beyond that bush some shadows dwellt
They danced with glee when the dead leaves fell.

Each branch so strong was suddenly bare
Trying to resist and almost failed
Grief had not touched them, such a relief
Instead the branches fell victim to embarrassment
Bending, bowing, tilting over
The weight of the world fell on this tree’s shoulders
Still abandoned, leaves blowing in the wind
You’re left with a crooked tree refusing to cave in.
